Seeing Your Website in a New Light

There are three kinds of business websites: The Curiosity, The Signpost and The PC.

Let me explain.

The Curiosity

In 1840, Charles Dickens published his novel, The Old Curiosity Shop, set amid an outdated collection of odds and ends which served no useful purpose. Not unlike this, the business website referred to as The Curiosity is equally outdated, filled with relics of a bygone era or just plain stale content, and serves no useful purpose.

The Curiosity lacks Search Engine Optimization (SEO) in addition to a mobile-optimized architecture. Without attention to the basics of SEO, The Curiosity, over time, will be virtually impossible to find in Search Engine Results, making its existence unnecessary. Unless the business intends to present a culture of outdated neglect, The Curiosity isn’t worth the monthly hosting fee. It’s curious that any business would maintain such a cost center.

The Signpost

The second kind of business website is The Signpost. One step up from The Curiosity, The Signpost might be a well-constructed, up-to-date, optimized and responsive website. It might employ the basics of SEO and even refresh its content periodically. However, lacking any dynamic content, The Signpost is little more than a billboard on the information highway.

Still merely a cost center, The Signpost falls short of proactively engaging users. Failing to provide the tools necessary to effectively convert visits to sales, The Signpost sees opportunity fly by, while standing at the side of the road hoping the user remembered the phone number correctly. The Signpost could easily direct visitors where they want to go, but instead, it STOPs them in their tracks.

The PC

The third kind of business website is The PC. Here, we aren’t referring to “politically correct” or “personal computers.” In this case, PC stands for profit center! This is where it literally pays to see your website in a new light.

Rather than maintaining an outdated, archaic curiosity or a static signpost providing your contact information to those proactive enough to find it, your website can be a revenue-generating, profit center! In fact, if it isn’t a profit center, it’s simply not worth having or hosting.

Seeing your website in light of its high-visibility and great potential to reach a broader clientele, should motivate the business owner to view his or her website as another revenue-generating employee.

The Profit Center

Your website is the single most-visible asset you own. More visible than a geographically-limited storefront; more useful in communicating your brand and engaging your customers on a global scale than any other means of marketing, service or sales you possess… and at a fraction of the cost!

To turn this invaluable and highly-visible asset into a revenue-generating PC requires a new way of thinking. More and more, as customers begin their search for products and services online and inform themselves using social media, neglecting or failing to optimize a static web presence effectively eliminates your business from consideration.

Seeing your website in light of its high-visibility and great potential to reach a broader clientele, should motivate the business owner to view his or her website as another revenue-generating employee.

Investing in the optimization, content marketing, and tools needed to transform your website into a dynamic, interactive and engaging hub for all your sales and marketing activities does not have to be excessive, and it will always pay dividends!
